My Journey to Becoming a Boxing Coach and the Power of Planting Seeds with Intention
Not all seeds are planted in the ground. Some are planted in the actions we take in the present that shape our future.
Just like real seeds, they don’t sprout overnight. I was recently reminded of this when one of my seeds blossomed, right before my eyes. This is the story about how one of my little dreams came true.
Quick background.
I didn’t grow up athletic or super confident. In fact, it was the complete opposite.
Over time, my fitness journey evolved, and so did my goals. I wanted to use fitness and nutrition to help others transform their lives, just as I had. Then I entered the 2025 Ms. Health & Fitness contest. For a moment, I thought winning Ms. Health & Fitness (and its $20,000 prize) could launch me into that world—funding a gym, certifications, and everything I needed to start coaching. But when that dream didn’t pan out, I had to ask myself: What’s next? How am I ever going to become a coach? So I prayed a lot and kept thinking about it in the back of my mind.
Planting the seed. 👩🏼🌾
One day it hit me—What if I became a coach at Title Boxing? I already knew the trainers, loved the classes and was deeply connected to the community. It felt perfect.
Then came the doubt. Am I even good enough? I want you to know that I’m not immune to negative thoughts. I just let those thoughts go. I refused to let those thoughts take root. Instead, I replaced them with:
✔️ There’s no harm in asking.
✔️ What’s the worst that could happen?
✔️ I am teachable. I can learn anything.
So, I asked.
The good news? They would be happy to train me. The bad news? They didn’t need any more trainers. The other good news? They’d keep me in mind. I was a little bummed, but I knew one thing for sure: I had just planted a seed!
Watering the seed. 💦
The work wasn’t over. Seeds don’t grow unless you nurture them.
🌱 I kept taking classes.
🌱 I stayed engaged with the community.
🌱 I built relationships with members.
🌱 I boxed with extra precision when the head trainer was around.
🌱 I imagined myself as a trainer every single time I stepped into that gym.
I never stopped believing it would happen. I just didn’t know when.
The first sprout. 🌱
Months later, a spot opened up! The bad news? It didn’t align with my schedule. I work 9-5, and my daughter has activities too. I stayed patient, positive, and kept watering. 💦🌱
Then, one day, I got the text from the head trainer. Another spot was opening up. This time, it fit my schedule perfectly. My seed had finally budded!!!
Growing Pains
I was over the moon. But little did I know—the real work was just beginning. Training to be a coach was harder than I expected.
While some things I was really good at, other things needed work. I had to learn the Title language and class framework. How to keep the class flowing.
Do you know what the hardest part really was, though? Being myself. The one thing they can’t teach me.
I was battling years of self-doubt and years of learning to truly embrace who I am. I was really being pushed outside of my comfort zone.
That’s when I realized—just like plants need sunlight, I needed positivity, grace, and determination. I had to drown out every negative thought with positive affirmations:
✨ I am capable.
✨ I was chosen for a reason.
✨ I will keep improving.
✨ I can do this.
✨ I am a beautiful person with a lovable personality.
I continued to write and read affirmations. I recorded myself. I practiced. I studied other coaches. I refined my cues and continued to find my rhythm.
The blossom. 🌸
And finally, on January 20th, 2025—my seed blossomed. I coached my first two classes and officially became a Title Boxing Club Evanston trainer.
This is such a dream come true for me. I’m very excited to have the opportunity to grow and develop my skills as a coach. To help push people past their limits so they can grow and reach their fitness goals.
I know the work isn’t over, but I can’t wait to see how this new oppurtunity will continue to grow into more opportunities.
I share this story because I want your dreams to blossom into reality as well. I hope this inspires you to plant more seeds and water them patiently.
Tips on how to grow your seeds.
Seeds require the right environment. If the seed isn’t growing, you don’t change the seed you change the environment.
Seeds require time to grow and develop. Some do happen faster than others, but you have to trust the process.
Your metaphorical plant requires sunlight. Stay positive. Never quit believing, and knowing without a doubt that your plant will blossom. Don’t doubt yourself. If those thoughts creep in, you push them out with more positive sunshine, even if it feels fake at first.
Seeds require the right amount of water to grow—not too much, not too little. Think of water like time and energy. Your seeds will require effort. You can’t just plant a seed and forget about it. You need to continue to learn, adapt, network, and study.
